19/20th Century France WMF OX Art Nouveau Jugendstil Dog & Lizard Visiting Card Tray 1900s
 
Rare Authentic Dog & Lizard Visiting Card Tray, France
WMF - Used from 1880 to 1925 for silver-plated Hollow-ware, and until 1930 for export articles. The Geislingen firm of Straub & Schweizer merged with the Esslingen firm of A. Ritter & Co. in 1880, to form the new company “Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik” (WMF) in Geislingen, with Daniel Straub as managing director. The new company´s choice of an ostrich as a trade-mark was determined by the Straub Family ´s heraldic animal, the German word for which is “Strauss”.
ox = Oxidized. The impresse decoration is blackened with a solution of sulphuret of potash and the flat areas are polished to a matt finish with pumice.
B = Britannia-metal, a tin and antimony alloy.
