My husband and I have been selling antiques for the last 35 years but have closed our shop and are clearing the remaining stock and parts of our personal collection. Please save us as favourites to keep an eye on new items to be offered.

This is a VERY unusual, vintage hand-woven twine, CURRENCY (wealth) bag, OR possibly a SHAMAN'S MEDICINE BAG ? from Papua New Guinea. Very similar to pieces from the ASMAT region although I have been informed that it could be from Lower Ramu. (I am not an expert in this field).
It features hand dyed woven twine and NASSA and cowrie shell decoration.

"Currency or Wealth" pieces such as these have been traded as part of a bride's dowry or for other reasons and were worn by tribesmen indicating wealth and status. 

Generally, because of the shell’s value, only people of importance and wealth could afford to wear them. 

This scarce and highly collectable piece measures approx. 23 cm wide x14 long, with  a drop of 32cm.

Weighs 150 grams before packing.

I am selling vintage and ANTIQUE items and therefore the items will reflect a certain amount of age and wear. They will not look brand new. Please email for more details if needed.

I pack well but recommend buyer take out insurance for valuable items. 
Packaging often includes recycled materials in order to keep postage costs down and do the right thing! If this is not suitable for you, email me and I will calculate the extra costs involved for new packaging. Thanks for your understanding!
