A unique antique, Regency, c. 1800-1815 board game, hand-drawn and hand-painted in watercolor. The game is a version of the "Goose Game", a racing game of the type that can be traced back to Socrates, and which was increasingly popular throughout the Renaissance and into the 18th- and early 19th-centuries. The game continued to be popular in France as the "Jeu de l'Oie" and in Italy as the "Gioco dell'Oca". Most extant games were printed. This exemplar is done by hand on paper, with 29 numbered circles with just the numbers, a live goose, a dead goose, or a cooked goose, leading to the final scene in the center, which features an interior scene of what might be a family enjoying a goose dinner with bottles of wine. Probably English, as costumes, decor, and watercolor itself seem English, but possibly French since the game seems to have been more prevalent on the continent. Fine burl wood frame, deep pink-coral mat. Wire on the back for hanging. 15.75ʺW × 0.8ʺD × 15.75ʺH. Professionally framed, in good condition; the illustration itself has tears, creases, and other marks.
