Photograph Notes: The original inn on this site dated back to the C17th as a coaching inn on the route between Newcastle and Hexham. It is named 'The Doctor Syntax' on the 1895 OS map ://communities.northumberland.gov.uk/006355 As already told here [[1034808]] the pub was named after a successful race horse of the 1820s. The name was derived in turn from a British cartoon school master drawn by Thomas Rowlandson to illustrate poems by William Combe, published in Ackerman's Political Magazine between 1809 and 1811, and in book form in 1812. In 'Dr Syntax in Search of the Picturesque' the character visits the Lake District ://geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/syntax/syn1fram
