Artist Biography: Attributed to Onorato Carlandi (Italian, 1848-1939). Onorato Carlandi was an Italian painter, mainly of watercolors of Rome, the surrounding countryside and of Great Britain. He began his career painting patriotic subjects such as La barca dei fratelli Cairoli (1869-1870) and the Ritorno da Mentana (1872), but drifeted into painting landscapes. He painted subjects including vedute of Rome of the Agro Pontino and recalled landscapes from Britain. He married Lena Haverty, daughter of the Irish historian and journalist, Martin Haverty. She was also an artist in her own right.

In 1875, he was one of the founders of the Società degli Acquarellisti in Italy, along with Roesler Franz, Pio Joris, and Cesare Biseo. Between 1880 and 1891 he traveled in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales painting the countryside. After his travels in Britain, and study of British watercolourists such as Peter de Wint (1784-1849) he returned to Italy in 1891. In 1904, he collaborated with Augusto Bompiani, E. Ferrari, and Alessandro Battaglia in illustrating an album donated to the visiting president of France, Loubet. He was that year also one of the founders of the gruppo dei XXV della Campagna Romana, painters of the countryside including Enrico Coleman, Giulio Aristide Sartorio, Napoleone Parisani, and Vittorio Grassi.

The frame is age tarnished with wear and marks to the gilt finish. The photographs form part of the description, please study all the images to fully satisfy yourself as to the condition.

Guarantee

  • Descriptions We Guarantee that all the artwork sold by Johns-Auction is genuinely as described. We describe all items with care not to mislead you, the buyer. All our listings include a condition report, multiple photographs, and a link to higher resolution photographs in a gallery album hosted by Google. eBay greatly reduces the quality of the images displayed, so for the higher quality images follow the link in the description to the gallery album.
  • Authenticity When we list an artwork as being "by" a particular artist, without a doubt we guarantee it to be an original artwork by the artist as stated. When we sell artwork described as an "oil painting", "watercolour" or a "print", this is quite simply what it really is. When we list artwork as by a "follower" or "school" or "manner" of an artist, or from a specific period or time eg. "19th century". Based on the available information, knowledge and research, that is what we believe the artwork to be. If we are not sure about the artist, medium, or age, we will clearly say so and tell you why.

Where needed to further our knowledge, artwork will be independently verified to be certain it is as described before being offered. Quite simply we have one rule, we do not sell recent fakes or forgeries. If any artwork could not be sold through a reputable Auction House, then we will not act fraudulently or underhandedly by offering it for sale here through Johns-Auction. If after a purchase you find there is doubt about our description of your artwork, we will offer a full no quibble refund.

Returns

  • Returns are accepted within 60 days when:

We will offer a full refund and (pay the return costs within the UK only). For buyers outside the UK, we will be happy to offer a partial refund on your purchase that both buyer and seller agree to be fair.
  • Damages If the item arrives damaged on delivery, we will launch a claim with the Courier. Damaged items and packaging are often required by the Courier to remain in situ with the recipient while claims are being investigated. This can take several weeks and in this instance, we can only authorise the return and pay a refund to you when the Courier investigation has completed.
  • Distance Selling Regulations Most Buy It Now purchases in the EU are covered under the Distance Selling Regulations, which give consumer buyers the right to cancel the purchase within fourteen working days after the day they receive the item. In this instance where there is no fault with the item or description, we expect the buyer to pay for the return of the purchase.
