Brief Artist History

Laurence Stephen Lowry 1887-1976

Born into a middle class family and raised in the leafy outskirts of Manchester. Lowrys famous for painting scenes of life in in industrial districts of the North West Of England, where he lived and worked for more than 40 years. He developed a distinctive style of Nieve painting and is best known for his urban landscapes with multiple figures referred to as "Matchstick men".
Lowry was never a full time artist. In his early 20's he took a job as a rent collector, and this would be his primary trade for four decades. Although Lowry painted most days after work, Often late into the night, and firmly rejected the term 'Sunday Painter' Remarking 'I'm a Sunday painter that paints every day of the week!" Lowry never adopted a impressionist colour palette and claimed to use five colours vermillion, ivory black, Prussian blue, yellow ochre and flake white.

A large collection of Lowrys artworks are on permanent display in 'The Lowry Art Gallery' Salford Quays, named in his honour.
