The complete title of this book is THE BAPTISTS OF TENNESSEE, VOLUME ONE. The book contains two main sections. The first  is "Tennessee's First Pastor" by Samuel C. Williams (1864-1947). It is the story of Rev. Tidence Lane (1724-1806). The second is "Tennessee's First Church"  by Samuel W. Tindell, is the story of the founding of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in 1779. There is an inscription on the front flyleaf that reads, "Presented to Mr. Hubert C. Brooks by Mary Tindell Shell and J. B. Shell, Jr., with kindest regards, September 3, 1960." Mrs. Shell (1894-1964) was the daughter of the co-author, Samuel W. Tindell (1844-1939). J. B. Shell (1934-2013) was her son. At the time this book was published (1930), Samuel Tindell was possibly the pastor or, more likely, the emeritus pastor of Buffalo Ridge as he died in 1939 at the age of 95. I believe Mrs. Shell wrote the entire inscription but included her son's name in her statement. NOTE: To my knowledge, there never was a "Volume Two" published unless it came out under a different title. The person to whom the inscription was written may possibly be Hubert Cornelius Brooks (1899-1962) of Johnson City, TN.

Shipped with the book in a box are 11 pages of additional historical and genealogical material to document the dates given in this description. One of those documents states Samuel W. Tindell was the President of Carson College in Mossy Creek, Tennessee (sometime in 1883/4?), before it merged to become Carson-Newman College (now University). However, I could not find records from CNU to confirm that.

Issued by Southern Publishers/Kingsport Press in Tennessee in 1930, the book is blue cloth hardcover. I would have graded this copy as being in Like New condition, but there is a small (6/8" x 1") mild discoloration at the bottom left corner of the front cover. No other condition issues. Issued without a DJ. It will be carefully packaged to insure safe shipping. D-bottom.
