Corundum is the name
derived from the Tamil language meaning Ruby. Corundum is the crystalline form
of aluminium and can be found in a variety of colours.
Synthetic
corundum is a laboratory created synthetic stone the chemical properties of
which are similar to those found in naturally occurring stones. Impurities are
non-existent in the synthetic stone. Synthetic Corundum is a robust material
and can scratch almost every other stone apart from a diamond and is widely
used in industrial applications. It is also a very dense material, which is
unusual, since the mineral in its natural form is composed of low atomic mass
elements such as aluminium and oxygen. There are various methods used to
produce Synthetic Corundum, the Flame Fusion and Verneuil Processes are the
most common.
Synthetic Corundum can be made in several colours depending on the impurities that are added. For example, deep red colour stones will be named Ruby and blue or green coloured stones will be named Sapphire.
