This rare antique porcelain jar from Vieux Old Paris is a stunning piece of French Victorian country decor. With a beautiful pink polychrome transferware finish and intricate Victorian pattern, it's perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any room. It’s elegant scroll type handles and leaves with an acorn knob lid, both adorned with gold gilt, are common characteristics of Old Paris Porcelain. This stunning jar also has extremely white porcelain, which is another indication that it was made by Vieux Paris. The piece is not marked on the bottom, however, there is what appears to be red writing or a red stamp on the inside rim of the lid. I wasn’t able to make out what it said, but I have included a picture for reference.
The cylinder-shaped jar is medium-sized and features one compartment with a lid and handle, making it perfect for storing biscuits or other small items.
From my research, it was crafted between 1750-1890 and this original piece is in a Regency or Victorian Style. The color is amazing with a stunning pink color and gold gilt! Both sides have an intricate polychrome transfer of Victorian/ Regency Era men and women. One side shows two couples having a picnic with two very skinny dogs, and the other side shows two women ice skating with a man admiring them. I couldn’t find another jar like this anywhere online or anything else with these particular scenes on them…so I have to believe this piece is VERY RARE! However, I am not an expert and I’m basing my assumptions off my research and from other Old Paris pieces made.
The jar has a height of 6 inches with the lid on, and a diameter of 5.5 inches. The jar is perfect for adding a touch of winter or summer, French Victorian, or French Revival-themed decor to any room. These biscuit jars are becoming more and more collectible and this particular one is definitely a one of a kind to add to your collection! I’m excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. There is some paint and gold gilt wear to this piece which can be seen in the pictures above!
