This affordable Lamp Matrix Test PCB has been designed to give a visual representation of the Lamp Matrix Circuits based on the Column/Diode/Row method used to activate the switched playfield lamps in most electronic pinball machines, including, but not limited to, Williams, Bally, Data East, Stern/Sega, Gottleib and SAM.

A 'buyer selectable' wiring loom for the range of Williams machines, i.e. System 3 thru WPC, is supplied with the Tester. For any other machine, the buyer will need to make the loom using the equivalent pinouts obtained from the manual of the machine to be tested. A schematic diagram for the Williams machines is included with the Tester. Thish shows how to make a suitable loom for another Williams machine, or it can be used as an aid to making a loom for other manufacturers' machines.

There is no need to remove any board from the machine when using the Tester, it will work with the boards mounted in the machine or on a test bench when the board under test, is powered up for testing. Simply plug the relevant and labelled socket connectors on to the corresponding header pins and the testing can begin. The PCB is designed to show one LED for each lamp on the playfield and will mimic any, or all the lamps in the same way as the machine does when operating, whether it be in Game Play, Attract Mode or the via the diagnostics functions if the machines has this capability. It also reflects the same layout as the Lamp diagrams shown in the operations manuals. Lamp 1 - Column 1/Row 1, Lamp 2 - Column 1/Row 2, and so on, as printed on the PCB. The pinouts as labelled on the PCB would be used to connect the equivalent pins when making your own wiring loom.

The Tester replicates all the lamps on the playfield and helps to determine where a fault may be located. When an individual Lamp on the playfield does not work, it is very rarely a board problem, but more likely a fault with the wiring loom on the playfield. Should a Row or Column of LEDs be completely off, or permanently on, then the problem will be with the board under test. This can be verified by tracing the relevant Row/Column wiring on the board using your own schematic diagram of the machine. If you do not have the experience to do this type of repair, we suggest you contact a reputable company who can do this work for you. We are currently unable to offer this type of service at this time.

Please note that the maximum number of lamps the matrix tester can represent is 64. For machines using more than 64 lamps, e.g. Stern’s Indiana Jones, you will require 2 wiring looms but only a single Matrix board.
