This inexpensive Pinball Machine Switch Matrix Test PCB has been designed to operate on all Switch Matrix Circuits based on the Row/Diode/Column method used to monitor the playfield switches as used in many electronic pinball machines, including, but not limited to, Williams, Bally, Data East, Stern/Sega, Gottleib and SAM.

A 'buyer selectable' wiring loom for the range of Williams machines, i.e. System 3 thru WPC, is supplied with the Tester. For any other machine, the buyer would need to make the loom using the equivalent pinouts obtained from the manual of the machine to be tested. A schematic diagram for the Williams machines is included with the Tester. This shows how to make a suitable loom for another Williams machine, or it can be used as an aid to making a loom for other manufacturer's machines.

The Tester will work with the boards mounted in the machine or on a test bench when the board is powered up for testing. Simply plug the relevant and labelled sockets on to the corresponding header pins and the testing can begin. Once connected, the Tester can simulate any switch in the matrix by pressing the relevant row and column buttons on the Tester board. This allows you to very quickly step through all 8 rows and 8 columns without having to find each switch on the playfield. For the Williams WPC machines, a header & jumper have been added to keep switch 24, which is always closed, activated whilst testing the remainder of the switches.

The Tester can be used to isolate a fault on the playfield, or confirm a fault on the Driver or CPU boards depending on the machine being tested.

Please note that the maximum number of switches the matrix tester can represent is 64. For machines using more than 64 switches, you will require 2 wiring looms but only a single matrix board.
