A Zanzibar chest has been associated with treasure, mystery, and eastern mythology ever since the time of sailing ships and the spice trade. They traveled with exiled queens and conquering princes. They were difficult to create and even more difficult to find. They were a hard-carved coffer with hammered metal plating, inside compartments, and hidden drawers. Usually, their legends came before them.

The Zanzibar chests were used by the rulers of Zanzibar, the Sultanate of Oman who were ousted by a revolution in the mid 60’s to transport their valuable personal belongings on their voyage to and from Zanzibar.  The chests are still made today and typically hold dowries, spices, or family heirlooms.
