Indian Barberry
Latin name: Berberis aristata
Berberis aristata, an evergreen shrub native to the
Himalayas, has a rich history of use as both food and medicine. Its fruit,
enjoyed raw or cooked, boasts a sweet and slightly acidic flavor. Dried, it is
a popular snack in India. Medicinally, various parts of the plant are employed
to treat a range of ailments, including malaria, eye issues, skin diseases, and
diarrhea. The plant contains the alkaloid berberine, known for its potent
antibacterial effects, particularly against enteric infections like bacterial
dysentery. However, it's essential to avoid combining it with Liquorice
(Glycyrrhiza species), as this can negate its effects.
