The first emperor of Japan according to the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki was Jimmu Tenno. His ascension is traditionally dated as 660 BC. In Japanese mythology, he was a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu through her grandson Ninigi.

This doll figure has Emperor Tenno in a gold thread embroidered robe with purple and white tassels. He carries his battle katana sword around his waist, arrows in his hand and in a quiver on his back. Around his neck is a beaded necklace with a medallion and possibly what appears to be the ears collected from his conquests. Interesting history.

The doll figure with stand is approximately 10” tall, 4” wide and 8” in length. The clothing has been stiffened and his body may be made of very hard papier-mâché. Not completely certain.

Emperor Tennu is in very good vintage condition with a tiny superficial crack line on top of his pointing index finger. It feels solidly intact. One of the “ears” on the necklace has a tiny point chipped off. The stand has some light wear consistent with age and a small mark on the back behind Emperor Tennu.
