One of the most interesting and spectacular sights in Brussels, Belgium is the Mannekin Fountain. This artistic bronze statuette of a “busy” little boy has been talked about throughout the centuries. The story of Mannekin is that sometime during the 17th century a little boy was lost. His frantic father searched and searched for him without success. Just when the heartbroken parent was about to give up, he found his son at the corner of Rue du Cheme and Rue de L’Eluve. So overjoyed was the father, that he had the Mannekin statuette erected on the very spot where he discovered his son, even showing the little fellow’s pose when he found him.

The statuette was cast in bronze after a model by Jerome Duquesnoy in 1619. The Mannekin has been a favorite place of the populace of Brussels for many years. Known as the “le plus ancient bourqeois de Bruxelles”. (the oldest citizen of Brussels), he has worn various costumes. When Louis XV took the city in 1747, the Mannekin wore an embroidered coat and was given the Cross of St. Louis. Later he wore the red cap of the Revolution. It is said that today he possesses 8 suits of clothes but he is, of course, cutest of all when he is “au naturel”.
