.Nathan’s first season with Richmond wasn’t any better than his last season with the Bulldogs from a team point of view , with Richmond losing the last 14 games in 2004 and finishing on the bottom of the ladder. Nathan made his senior debut with Richmond in Round 1, 2004 against Collingwood . He played 20 games , performed very well throughout the season finishing 3 rd in the club Best and Fairest. He was also selected in the International Rules team winning the Jim Stynes Medal. In 2005 with Nathan’s previous coach at the Bulldogs , Terry Wallace , taking over as Senior coach at Richmond the team was much more competitive and after 9 games was 7 wins and 2 losses. Nathan through this stretch played a string of match winning performances including a sensational last quarter burst against Collingwood in Round 8 with 5 goals to help the Tigers to come from behind to win. Nathan had a 4 goal match winning game against theBrisbane Lions in Round 9 bringing his seasons tally to 32 goals . Tragically , in a football sense , after 18 disposals and 2 goals inRound 10 against Melbourne , Nathan broke his leg when attempting a left foot kick as Demon defender Matthew Whelan dived across in a legitimate attempt to smother the ball. Nathan’s right foot became stuck in the ground surface . The injured even sickened media personality Robert Walls , who was watching the match on Television to the extent that he had to turn off the TV.
Richmond lost the game by 57 points and would only have three more wins for the rest of the season. Nathan had a titanium rod inserted into his tibia and underwent extensive therapy and rehabilitation over the following pre-season . Despite this treatment Nathan would suffer further complications with his broken leg , among other injuries a persistent groin problem. Nathan played 10 games in 2006. In 2007 with the Tigers at the bottom of the ladder Nathan did not play a senior game until Round12 when Richmond defeated Melbourne by 49 points for its first win of the season with Nathan kicking 3 goals . In a quirky twist of fate Nathan played his 200 th AFL game in 2008 against Melbourne in Round 12 with the Tigers winning by 22 points . Nathan retired from AFL football at the end of 2009. Nathan was a sublimely skillful player who with his uncanny goal kicking capability could exert a real presence on a game
