On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) very scarce antique map "Monmouthshire."

DATE PRINTED: 1858 lithograph, based on a plate first issued in 1804.

SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 7.25" x 9.25" (18.5 cm x 23.5 cm) with a centre fold as issued.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Engraved by Roper from a drawing by Cole. George Cole was a cartographer and draughtsman. John Roper (1771-1810) an engraver.

PROVENANCE:  This plate was first published in Cole's "The British Atlas " in 1804 and subsequently in "English Topography" between 1816 and 1827.  The maps then appeared, updated with the railways and plate numbers, in Dugdale's "Curiosities of Great Britain: England & Wales Delineated." published between 1835 until 1842. The plates had a final and scarce usage as lithographic plates by the firm of H.G. Collins in the 1850's.  Firstly under the  title 'Collins Railway Pocket Atlas of England & Wales' (known in a single example) and slightly later as 'Collins' Railway and Pedestrian Atlas of England' c.1858 (only 2 copies recorded in COPAC, in the BL and CUL), updated with the railways to this date.  It is from this latter atlas that these maps were taken.

AUTHENTICITY: This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy. The term 'original' when applied to a print means that it was printed at the first or original date of publication; it does not imply that the item is unique.

POSTAGE / SHIPPING COSTS: I only charge postage for the first print ordered. There is no additional postage charge if you order more than one print.
