Matthew had played on the wing and half-forward-flank. Recruited from South Adelaide, he has slotted stright into the seniors and not looked back. He is a fine mark and not dissimilar to Royce Hart the way he floats across the front of a pack to mark the ball. Matthew is an intelligent player who moves well had has proved a very handy goalkicker for the club. In 1994, he tied with fellow South Australian Jamie Tape for the Best First Year Player award. In 1995, he missed several early games due to injury; however, he finished the season strongly and was one of Richmond’s best players in all three Finals games. His game against Essendon showed his class particularly in the last quarter when he took two marks under extreme pressure and kicked two goals to give Richmond a handy lead. At this stage in his career, he shows all the signs of having a fine future ahead of him.
