HISTORICAL NOTE CONTINUEDTHE HJ TROOPS

The HJ in Germany, was the youth organization of the German Political Party and its origins date back to 1922. From 1933 until 1945, it was the sole official youth organization in Germany and was partially a paramilitary organization; was composed of the selected German male youths aged 14 to 18. The German youngsters in the H. Youth (Deutsches Jungvolk in der HJugend or "DJ", also "DJV") for younger boys aged 10 to 14, and for girls it was the League of German Girls (Bund Deutsche Mädel or "BDM"). Originally intended to foster the ideology of the German Party, with the rise of the Führer the organization shifted its focus to become a paramilitary organization training young boys for service in the Reich. Membership in the HJ in 1923 was just over 1200, however by the end of 1933 the number was 2.3 million youths and by 1936 the number in the HJ exceeded 5 million.

HISTORICAL NOTE CONTINUEDKARABINER 98 (K98k) BOLT-ACTION RIFLE

The Karabiner 98 often abbreviated Kar98k or K98k is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge that was adopted on 21 June 1935 as the standard service rifle by the German Wehrmacht.  It was one of the final developments in the long line of Mauser military rifles. Although supplemented by semi- and fully automatic rifles during World War II, it remained the primary German service rifle until the end of the World War II in 1945. Millions were captured by the Soviets at the conclusion of the war and were widely distributed to other communist countries.

The Karabiner 98k is a controlled-feed bolt-action rifle based on the Mauser M98 system. Its internal magazine can be loaded with five 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridges from a stripper clip or one-by-one. A turned-down bolt handle on the Karabiner 98k replaced the straight bolt handle, found on earlier models. This change made it easier to rapidly operate the bolt reduced the amount the handle projected beyond the receiver, and enabled mounting of aiming optics directly above the receiver.

The Mauser Karabiner 98k rifle was widely used by all branches of the armed forces of Germany during World War II. It saw action in every theatre of war involving German forces, including occupied Europe, North Africa, the Soviet Union, Finland, and Norway. Although comparable to the weapons fielded by Germany's enemies at the beginning of the War, its disadvantages in rate of fire became more apparent as American and Soviet armies began to field more semi-automatic weapons among their troops. Still, it continued to be the main infantry rifle of the Wehrmacht with over 14.5 million being produced by the end of the War.

Note: We have recently completed travel to the Netherlands, including stops in Eindhoven and Arnhem, as well as extended travel in Germany, visiting a number of WWII sites as well as many of the World War II museums. In addition, we have previously visited All of the Five Landing Beaches along the Normandy coastline and nearly all of the museums in and around the Norman towns on several occasions. We have also spent time on several occasions, including our most recent travel in October 2019, in the Bastogne area including the Baugnez '44 Museum, site of the Malmedy Massacre, and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found both the French and Belgian people, especially in and around the Normandy and Bastogne area, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy, Bastogne or perhaps in Germany, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the areas easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
