All of the warring nations that fought in WWII had their own combat journalists and photographers. Germany was no exception… each individual branch of the fighting services had their dedicated journalists who would follow and record the exploits of the various units, divisions and armies. Many of these journalists were also skilled photographers and captured many important images that illustrated the war... including the victors and the vanquished. This kneeling reporter, from the Waffen-SS weekly “Das Schwarze Korps” (The Black Corps), who is armed with a captured U.S. M1 Carbine, takes a photo of a number of his comrades making their way alongside... or perhaps across a snow-covered road as they move towards the American lines.

Please Note: Images contained in this listing of actual WWII German Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS troops, in action during "Wacht am Rhein" (Watch on the Rhine)... Battle of the Bulge, the German Map of 'Wacht am Rhein', the actual U.S. M1 Carbines (or the diagram of the M1 Carbine), The Mardasson Memorial in Bastogne, or the Recogne German War Cemetery (near the town of Foy, Belgium) or any other images from The Battle of the Bulge are ALL FOR HISTORICAL OR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE OF THIS KING & COUNTRY BBG128 WWII WINTER "THE COMBAT PHOTOGRAPHER" FIGURE!

HISTORICAL NOTETHE BATTLE OF THE BULGE (16 DECEMBER 1944 - 25 JANUARY 1945)

The Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945) was the last major German offensive campaign in its western theater during World War II. The offensive was planned by the German forces with utmost secrecy, with minimal radio traffic and movements of troops and equipment under cover of darkness. It was launched on the Western Front in the European theatre through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg, towards the end of World War II. Although civilians in the area made the Allies aware of troop and armour movements and the Allies failed to act upon intercepted German communications that indicated a substantial German offensive preparation; the surprise attack caught the Allied forces completely off guard. American forces bore the brunt of the attack and incurred their highest casualties of any operation during the war. The battle also severely depleted Germany's armoured forces, and they were largely unable to replace them. German personnel and, later, Luftwaffe aircraft (in the concluding stages of the engagement), also sustained heavy losses.

The Germans officially referred to the offensive as Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein ("Operation Watch on the Rhine"), while the Allies designated it as the Ardennes Counteroffensive. Contemporary press describing the bulge in the German front lines on wartime news maps coined the phrase “Battle of the Bulge”, and it became the most widely used name for the battle. While ultimately ill-fated, the German offensive was intended to stop Allied use of the Belgian port of Antwerp and to split the Allied lines, allowing the Germans to encircle and destroy four Allied armies and force the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty that would be more favorable to the Axis powers. Once that was accomplished, the German Fuhrer believed he could fully concentrate on the Soviets on the Eastern Front.

Please Note: As of 2019, we have now toured many of the battle sites, museums, towns and cities in the Netherlands and Germany, using the same self-guided, GPS supported itinerary that we have used on past travel to visit All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin Peninsula and many of the historical locations, museums and restored bunkers in and around Normandy. Also, as part of our 2019 trip to Europe, we used the same GPS supported format to once again visit the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the 101st Airborne Museum, The Bastogne War Museum, The December 44 Historical Museum, Stoumont Belgium, The Mardasson Memorial, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found the people of the Netherlands (Nederlanders), the French and the Belgian people, especially in Amsterdam, the towns in Normandy and the area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French, Dutch and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you plan to visit the area in and around Normandy, the Netherlands or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the areas easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
