Dean Smith is a leading contemporary Australian artist and ceramicist who produces finely-thrown stoneware and porcelain with special effect high fire glazes combined with low fire enamels and precious metal lustres.


Born in Brisbane, raised in New Zealand and with Maori ancestry, Dean is largely self-taught. His parents were friends with master potter Ted Secombe who introduced him to crystalline glazes. Other early influences were American metal worker and enamelist, June Schwarcz and Chinese Sung Dynasty ceramics.


Dean has lived and worked in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth and is now based in Castlemaine, Victoria.


His work has featured in important national and international ceramic exhibitions and has won major awards including the Silver Prize Taiwan Ceramics Biennale 2012, Special Citation 8th Cheongju International Craft Competition South Korea 2013, Winner, Clunes National Ceramic Award 2013, Winner Vase Finder International 9th Annual Exhibition USA 2014 and finalist in the 2016 Biennial North Queensland Ceramic Art Award.
