Amazing WW2 Royal Canadian Navy Oil Painting by David Griffin of HMCS Kitchener “Emergency Sugar 180”

David Griffin (b.1927) is a well known maritime artist from Brighton, after a short period in the service he had a successful career as an illustrator, painting part time but still exhibiting at the RSMA. After going full time he became the Vice President of the Chelsea Art Society and is extremely well known across the world including the USA, Scandinavia, Japan and Europe and is listed in the Dictionary of 20thC Marine Artists.

This particular oil on board is of the revised Flower Class Corvette, HMCS Kitchener of the Royal Canadian Navy in convoy during WW2 and is tilted “Emergency Sugar 180”, which refers to the flags hosted on her mast, the message to the rest of the convoy is that she has sighted a periscope or snort at 180 degrees.

It’s extremely well painted with a real depth to the weather & choppy seas. It’s well presented in a gilt frame, signed by the artist and has a verso to the rear by Omell Galleries with original price tag of £595

(16” x 20”)
