The book covers some 312 species of ferns and fern allies, giving details, where known, of distribution, habitat, cultivation and means of identification. A black and white line drawing accompanies each species. Related plants are grouped where possible into chapters.

The remainder, which includes the bulk of the ferns, are gathered together in one large chapter and arranged in alphabetical order to make for ease of location and identification. Lists of Australian ferns and fern allies, their classifications and common synonyms are included to further aid in the identification of species.
Colour illustrations of unusual or indigenous species. Most of these are in-situ shots wish some close-ups to show details not usually seen.
