Isaac Bickerstaff. (Richard Steele)

London, Printed for H.Lintot, T. Longman,...

A literary and popular news and gossip journal, "The Tatler" was created by Richard Steele in 1709 and published through 1711, with contributions from Swift and Joseph Addison, among others. It was the first journal of its kind, and was copied by such other popular journals as "The Spectator" and "The Rambler." The supposed author, Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq. was a name first created by Jonathan Swift as part of an elaborate hoax, and then later adopted by Steele.
