Please meet ‘JUNE’

A Collectible Early Victorian Mourning Jewellery Necklace ~Property from the ESTATE of Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash~

Up for Sale is a stunning Historical Necklace owned & worn by June Carter Cash, The beloved Country Singer & wife of Johnny Cash.

A One of a Kind piece

One Victorian Bohemian Rose Cut Garnet and Pearl cluster Mourning Necklace set in Silver With Garnet Gold Wash, Pearl and garnet drop with a Hand Painted Miniature Portrait Painting on porcelain , in its original pigskin carrying case.

Origin : probably Continental, French circa 1840-1850

Reputed to have been featured in the Movie “ Gone With The Wind” and purchased in a sale of property effects from that movie in the 1950’s.

View attached paperwork from the Estate Sale at Sotheby’s, New York, purchased by the prior owner.

The Necklace may be considered a Crossover collectible of both MOURNING Jewellery , with its MINIATURE PORTRAITURE Painting & Bohemian garnet cluster Jewellery.

The painting is on Porcelain and in fine antique condition for its 184 year history . Almost 2 Centuries!

The Pretty Young Girls Portrait Painting is very detailed . She has Tight brown curls that lay just below her shoulder. She is wearing a bonnet tied under her chin with Pink & Blue flowers at the top left. The young lady has large light brown eyes , pink eyelids, brown eyebrows and pretty pink lips . Her dress is burgundy velvet with a wide plaid Collar of white, brown & blue highlighted by a big Blue bow in front of her dress. The darker contrasting background makes the young girl stand out.

Who was this beloved angelic girl?

To me she has always been “June”.

The miniature Portrait painting, by itself is approx size 1 1/4” . It is encased by a frame of lovely seed pearls ( signifying tears) and then set within a border of claret Red Rose cut pyrope Garnets. The setting is approx

2” by 1 1/2” minus the drop. Below the Portrait is a Rose cut Garnet & Pearl drop pendant measuring approximate at 1”.

The length of the wearable necklace

size approx 14 “

There is a 2 1/2” gold safety chain .

Notice the detail of tiny seed pearls set in the center of each individual Garnet link throughout the chain.

The end of the necklace has a Garnet box clasp that is in working order . Silver Tongue fits in its box snugly.

In Some photos the lighting is a bit bright, making the garnets lighter in color.

The garnets are darker & luxurious

The Paint is in fine Antique condition for its age. This piece was beloved by its owners, well preserved & cared for.

It looks like a Museum Piece displayed in Prague.

In the photo &

Under the loupe I can see

There is some normal paint wear to the miniature painting commensurate with almost 2 centuries.

A small scratch of paint is missing from her lower left lip.

There are about 10~ 12 small pricks of paint missing to the background. A few to her right shoulder, & a few to the left side of her head. Please View photo. They are Hard to see by eye.

The sterling silver base metal is finished with a Rose Garnet Gold Vermeil wash , typical for these pieces.

Look at the rear photos of the piece, you may see the base Silver base Metal used in the making of this necklace. They used silver as a base metal in only the finest produced Bohemian Garnet Cluster Jewellery from the time period. It was expensive & durable.

The necklace is estimated to be circa early Victorian 1840-1850 French.

The Original commissioning family were likely very comfortable financially.

To commemorate their young daughter with a Miniature portraiture was afforded only to the wealthiest classes.

Add in Silver, Bohemian pyrope Garnet gemstones, Gone with the Wind, Country American Royalty provenance & we have “ June”.

An exciting piece for so many reasons.

It was always a conversation starter when I wore ‘June.’

There is ONE garnet missing from

the entire necklace.l! It’s on the last link before the box clasp closure. Please View photo. it’s not noticeable & would lay behind one’s neck.

Can be replaced with old stock garnet , if desired.

Price reflects same.

The Necklace wears well with any Wardrobe. Dress it up or down. The sparkling brilliance of bohemian garnets make the miniature Portrait stand out. This piece is surely to be noticed & admired when worn.

A Good conversation ice breaker~

This is a stunning historical piece of Garnet Cluster jewellery From my private Victorian Mourning & Portraiture collection. It would make a great addition to any jewelry collection. Especially enjoyed by conservators who admire Jewellery in History, The Carter Cash’s, Bohemian Garnets, Mourning or sentimental Jewellery, ‘Gone with the Wind’ Cinema, & Miniature Portraits.

I have cherished this necklace not only for its beauty, nor its historical value , but also as a connection to June Carter Cash’s appreciation for Fine Antique Victorian Bohemian Garnets, Mourning & mini Portraiture jewelry. Additionally, the Film was an all time favorite of mine as well.

‘June’ has lovingly been In my collection & care for decades. I purchased her from Ms Derringer, the prior owner, who acquired her at Johnny & June Carter Cash’s ESTATE sale at Sotheby’s, New York.

So ? Was this under June Carter Cash’s stewardship from the effects of ‘Gone with the Wind’ in 1950’s through her passing :D

‘June’ is now Looking for her next conservator going forward.
