Description:


A scarce copy of the first (and only?) Dublin edition of this work by the botanist, Thomas Martyn, containing detailed inventories of works of art in the private collections of some of the nobility and gentry of England, often including the rooms in which they were located.
Both volumes showing evidence of more recent restoration. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands to spines, gilt lettering to morocco labels, and gilt decoration to compartments. Vol. I with joints split, though both boards holding firmly. Vol. II rebacked with sections of original backstrip preserved. Replacement endpapers (except front pastedown in Vol. I), armorial bookplate at front of both volumes. Inner hinges strengthened. Text-blocks remain firm. Vol. I lacking title-page, otherwise text appears to be complete. Vol. II with significant water-staining throughout, reducing towards rear. Contents page in Vol. II with old clear tape across the word 'Contents', Pages with some age-toning, foxing and scattered minor blemishes, more so to Vol. I.
