George James (1932-2016 )...Born: Detroit, MI.....Died: Newport Beach, CA

Studied: Chouinard Art Institute (Los Angeles), Long Beach State College

George James grew up in Southern California. During his teenage years he attended the Brandt-Dike Summer School of Painting in Corona del Mar and studied watercolor painting with Rex Brandt, Phil Dike and George Post.

During the 1950s, he developed a geometric, abstractionist style of watercolor painting. Most of his works of this era were inspired by beach-city subjects in the Newport and Balboa area of Orange County. They were exhibited with the California Water Color Society and sold through local art galleries.

James has taught art since the 1960s and became an Associate Professor at California State University, Fullerton. In more recent years he has produced photorealist watercolors and is actively exhibiting. His unique technique of painting on synthetic paper allows him to wash out large areas of his artwork and to completely rework a painting. James credits this technique with much of his success at national exhibitions.

James is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society and Dolphin Fellowship. His awards include the following: AWS Bronze Medal 1998, AWS Gold Medal 1999, AWS Silver Medal 2014, AWS Ida wells Stroud Award 2000, NWS Silver Medal 2001, Waterworks 2003, NWWS First Prize 2003 and the Louisiana Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition, First Prize 2003.

The artist’s work has been included in numerous one-man shows, group exhibitions, and regional and international exhibitions. In 2007, he participated in the Jiangsu Watercolor Society International Watercolor Exhibition in Nanjing, China.
