Photograph Notes: Henry Danvers (15731643) was an English aristocrat and soldier who was created Earl of Danby Baron Danvers of Dauntsey, Wiltshire - by King James I. In 1622 Danvers gave this five acres of land opposite Magdalen College, that had previously served as a Jewish cemetery, to the University of Oxford for the encouragement of the study of physic and botany". He had the ground raised and enclosed it within a high wall with several gateways. This one was designed by Nicholas Stone, a master mason, who frequently worked with Inigo Jones.
