Salvador Dali 'In the Hands of Antaeus' Original 1964 Woodblock Divine Comedy

Salvador Dali Signed Woodblock Engraving - From Dali's Divine Comedy Suite: Original color woodblock engraving, 10.25 x 13, boldly signed "Dali" along the lower margin in red art pencil. Durets Les Peintres Impressionistes, Paris. In fine condition

The Divine Comedy suite consists of 100 color wood engravings created between 1960 and 1964 after 100 watercolors painted by Salvador Dali between 1951 and 1960. More than 3,000 blocks were necessary to complete the engraving process. In the early 1950s Salvador Dali was invited by the Italian government to commemorate the birth of Dante, Italy’s most famous poet, by producing a series of illustrations for a full-text, deluxe edition of Dante’s masterpiece, the Divine Comedy. Ultimately, the illustrations were not well received by the Italians, as it was deemed inappropriate for a Spanish painter (rather than an Italian painter) to have illustrated the work of Italy’s greatest poet. Even though the project was dropped in Italy, Dali and French publisher Joseph Foret continued to pursue publication of the Divine Comedy. Mr. Foret acted as broker between Salvador Dali and Les Heures Claires, a French editing and publishing house that ultimately took full charge of the project.

Details

Unusual and beautiful woodblock engraving erroneously or purposely signed upside down.  I have kept it in a climate controlled storage for the last +25 years. In overall good to very good condition. Colors very vibrant and not faded. Colors have not yellowed for it was never exposed to sunlight before. Overall excellent condition for a print from a 40 year vintage. Never framed before.

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marquess of Dalí de Púbol gcYC was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship and the striking and bizarre images in his work. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Dalí received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid.

Ships without frame. This lithograph should be handled with gloves and utmost care. I suggest not to open it upon arrival but to to take directly to your frame store. Please make sure to use a frame store that has experiencing in handling art, not just standard posters. Tell them the this is an original lithograph, not a cheap poster. Tell them to wear gloves and treat it as an art curator in a museum would. Make sure to have them open it in your presence so you can both agree on the condition when you left it so there are no disputes. Ask if they offer some kind of insurance policy in case they damage it (it has happened). Have it framed with acid-free matting and a plexiglass frame with UV-filter. Tell them to use acid-free hinging tape and preferably as little as possible.  These are just my suggestions. Thank you for taking care of this valuable print.
