Descended from the grand lineage of the 18th dynasty founded by Ahmose I, Hatshepsut was wife to a king, regent to his son, then queen, enjoying a long and prosperous rule. Under Hatshepsut, Egypt grew rich, peaceful and powerful. Most importantly for historians, she embarked on a number of ambitious building projects, including her own mortuary temple, which remained unrivalled in their architectural excellence for a thousand years. Yet for centuries the exact whereabouts and identity of her mummy remained a mystery to archaeologists. Now, through a remarkable chain of events, Hatshepsut's body has finally been identified and vital clues to her cause of death revealed.
