I cannot find another one of these anywhere….

Stunning Art Deco Chrome & Rosewood Triple Decanter Tantalus by George Betjemann (c.1920’s)

This is indeed a feast for the senses and extremely rare. It’s made & patented by George Betjemann & Sons who were a London based cabinet makers founded in 1851. They manufactured high end furniture and patented the decanter tantalus which are extremely popular today. The firm continued with various generations of Betjemann sons, converting into a limited company in 1909 until 1939 when John (the future poet laureate Sir John Betjeman) having no interest in running it, sold it to Puddefoot, Bowers & Simonett Ltd.

This particular tantalus is possibly a one off, made to order. It screams Art Deco, with sunburst decanters, pyramid shaped stoppers, angled holder and handle. It has chromed fittings on a rosewood base and a patented lock to one side, which works well and comes with its original key.

The 3 decanters are in fair condition with the odd minor nibble to the lead crystal stoppers, some minimal wear to the chrome and two small repairs to the rims of the decanters, all commensurate with its age. This definitely does not detract from the aesthetic of the Art Deco sunburst design (19”W x 12”H x 5”D)
