DATE PRINTED: 1840.  This publication is undated. Most libraries attribute a date of 1840 however some offer a slightly earlier date.

SIZE: The printed area including titles of the view is approximately 17 x 12.5 cm (6.75 x 5 inches) with a blank back (small). 

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Engraved by Joseph Swan from an original study by J. Fleming.  John Fleming (1792-1845) was a Scottish landscape painter who lived and worked in Greenock. He is best known for the series of views he painted for Swan's Lakes of Scotland, published at Glasgow in 1834.  Joseph Swan (1796–1872) was an engraver and publisher active in Glasgow in the early nineteenth century.

TYPE: Antique plate engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  Rothesay (Scottish Gaelic: Baile Bhòid ) is the principal town on the Isle of Bute, in the council area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies along the coast of the Firth of Clyde. It can be reached by ferry from Wemyss Bay, which offers an onward rail link to Glasgow. At the centre of the town is the 13th-century ruin Rothesay Castle, unique in Scotland for its circular plan.
