The water bottle adapter should be placed at nose height which allows

the pet to tip their head up slightly to drink from the adapter.

When they lick the mechanism on the adapter it allows the water to flow

Be patient with your pet if they are new to this adapter, place a small amount of peanut butter or such around the metal outside part and show your pet gently by bringing their lip to mechanism and push lip into mechanism to let a little water to flow out for pet to lick.  Be patient, you may need to show your pet several times gently. Remove all water bowls and monitor pet so they do not get dehydrated. Bring back water bowl at designated times only for a few minutes if pet is not catching on to adapter right away. Be Patient!
