William Rhind (1797–1874)


His magnum opus was his 711-page A History of the Vegetable Kingdom, which appeared in about 1841 and went through eight later editions up to 1877 Written for both the general reader and the systematic student of botany, it embraced “the physiology, classification and culture of plants [both living and fossil], with their various uses to man and the lower animals, and their application in the arts, manufactures, and domestic economy.”
