Wild Chinese jujube 

Latin name: Ziziphus jujuba

Chinese jujube is a deciduous tree with thorny branches from East Asia. It reaches heights of 6-8 m (20-26 ft). 
It is originated to China, where it has been grown for its nutritious fruits for over 4000 years. 
Nowadays it is widespread in the Mediterranean. Rough bark of the tree is brown. 
Its light brown drupes are elongated or elliptical and contain only one seed. 
This species has adapted to extreme temperature fluctuations. It tolerates temperatures from -20 °C to +40 °C (from -4 °F to 105 °F). 
Temperatures between +30 ° C and -15 ° C (5-85 °F) are ideal for its optimal growth. 
When colder spring occures, its leaves sprout later. 
Its tasty fruits can be eaten raw, cooked or dried. 
Chinese jujube is grown on the northeastern mountain slopes of the Himalayas as a fodder for silkworms. 
Its bark and leaves contain tannins. These tannins can have a soothing effect on sore throats, hoarseness or inflammation in the throat. 
Fruits are used to treat coughs and bronchitis. It is traditionally used in combination with carob tree and common marshmallow because of its mucous membrane-contracting effect against diarrhea.

This wild form has smaller fruits.
