Description

An extraordinary round shrub with pendant branches, large long leaves and exotic flowers comprised of yellow blossoms which emerge at the end of a tube-like structure of overlapping bracts. The flower resembles parrot's beak. Large yellow pod contains 1 seed. Sow seed in standard potting mix with good drainage. Grow in full light, water freely and feed once a month. Related species - Gmelina Arborea. These are tropical plants, can be deciduous in cooler climates.

Other-worldly, long, tubular, overlapping racemes hang like pendants and end in pointy, beak shaped lemon-yellow flowers. The trumpet shaped flowers wait for pollination then develop into small, yellow non-edible fruit. Grown mainly for its decorative chain like flower pendants this small tree only reaches about 15 feet at full size and is covered in ivy like, deep green leaves. Nothing about this plant is normal and even the bark is unusual. Often used for bonsai gardening this is an easy to grow plant for the urban garden collection or small patio in a city setting.

Recognition: Sprawling shrub with dangling branches. Leaves opposite, having peltate (shield-shaped) scales beneath. Inflorescences large dangling racemes with yellow flowers protruding between bracts

Landscape uses
Brightly colored specimen shrub with scandent-dangling branches.

Gmelina asiatica (G. elliptica Sm.), Bulang, native to India and Sri Lanka, is often spiny and has the leaves often three-lobed; they are villous (silky) beneath. This species is used sometimes as a thorny hedge. Gmelina arborea is an Indian tree species cultivated infrequently in Florida. Its flowers are bicolored yellow and brown.

Medicinal use
The juice of the fruit is applied to eczema of the feet. It is also used as a leech repellent. The fruit, pounded with lime, is applied as a poultice to the throat as a remedy for coughs.

The extract of the roots is used internally as a stimulant, resolvent, and in treating diseases of the joints and nerves. The juice of the roots is used as a purgative and in treating fatigue

Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot.
