Sir Thomas Playford became a South Australian, even an Australian, institution in his own lifetime.  As Premier for twenty-seven years, from 1938 to 1965, he was able to influence the development of that State more than any other Premier.

Sir Walter Crocker has provided a portrait of a profoundly interesting man and his times. From it we learn the lessons of his life, especially from his principles and policies, relevant to the increasingly difficult problem of governing modern society.
