THE DESERTED VILLAGE

by Oliver Goldsmith

Das Verodete Dorf

Aus dem Englischen des Goldsmiths in Deutsche übersetzt von Johann Georg Schlosser

Oliver Goldsmith's celebrated poem on rural decline published in English alongside a prose translation into German by the 18th century polymath - historian, politician, translator, philosopher (and Goethe's brother-in-law) - Johann Georg Schlosser.  This volume appears to reproduce the 18th century Darmstadt publication of the Goldsmith poem along with Schlosser's translation at the time.  Also includes a Nachwort - Afterword.

From my limited German, I take this reproduction to have been published privately in 1924 in Frankfurt am Main in a limited edition of 300 copies, this example being No. 42.

The book is overall in good condition, the main blemish being that the final page and rear end paper are parting from the block and almost loose; the binding of the rest of the volume still seems solid.  Grey paperboard hardback covers, with titling to front board, faded at the top edge and joint.  Otherwise very good.  Internally the pages are good and clean.  German is in Gothic script.  Goldsmith poem pp vii, 31; German translation plus following material pp. 33.  Book measures 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 ins. (190 x 115 mm)
