Brunfelsia grandiflora, commonly known as yesterday, today, and tomorrow or morning-noon-and-night, is a species of flowering shrub in the Solanaceae family. Native to tropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil, it is widely cultivated for its attractive and fragrant flowers.

  1. Plant Appearance:

    • Brunfelsia grandiflora is an evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub that can reach heights of 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters). It has a rounded, bushy growth habit with dense foliage.
  2. Leaves:

    • The leaves are glossy, elliptical to lance-shaped, and arranged in an alternate fashion along the stems. They are typically dark green in color.
  3. Flowers:

    • The most distinctive feature of Brunfelsia grandiflora is its flowers. The plant produces clusters of tubular, fragrant flowers that change color over a period of a few days. The blooms transition from purple or violet (yesterday) to lavender or lilac (today) and finally to white (tomorrow).
  4. Fragrance:

    • The flowers emit a sweet, pleasant fragrance, especially in the evening, attracting pollinators like moths.
  5. Blooming Period:

    • Brunfelsia grandiflora typically flowers in cycles, with a continuous blooming pattern throughout the year. Each cluster of flowers provides a multi-colored display, contributing to its popular common names.
  6. Sunlight and Temperature:

    • This shrub prefers full to partial sunlight and thrives in tropical to subtropical climates. It is not frost-tolerant and may require protection or be grown as a container plant in colder regions.

1. Planting:

  • Select a Suitable Location:

    • Choose a location with well-draining soil and exposure to partial to full sunlight. Morning sunlight is preferable, with some protection from intense afternoon sun, especially in hotter climates.
  • Soil Preparation:

    • Brunfelsia pauciflora prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Incorporate organic matter, such as compost, into the soil before planting to improve fertility and drainage.
  • Planting Depth:

    • Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing:

    • Space multiple plants at least 3 to 6 feet apart, considering the mature size of Brunfelsia pauciflora.
  • Watering After Planting:

    • Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and encourage the establishment of the root system.

2. Care:

  • Sunlight:

    • Provide Brunfelsia pauciflora with partial to full sunlight. Morning sunlight is ideal, but some protection from intense afternoon sun can prevent stress in hotter climates.
  • Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. During dry periods, increase watering frequency.
  • Fertilization:

    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, before the growing season begins. Follow the recommended dosage on the fertilizer packaging. Avoid excessive nitrogen to promote flowering.
  • Pruning:

    • Prune the shrub after the blooming cycle to maintain its shape and encourage bushiness. Remove any dead or spent flowers regularly. You can also selectively prune to control its size.
  • Mulching:

    • Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Protection from Frost:

    • Brunfelsia pauciflora is not frost-tolerant. In colder climates, consider providing protection or growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.
  • Pest and Disease Control:

    • Monitor the plant for pests such as aphids or spider mites. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used for control. Regularly inspect for signs of pests and diseases.
  • Container Planting:

    • In colder climates, consider growing Brunfelsia pauciflora in containers that can be moved indoors during winter. Ensure the container has drainage holes.

Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot.
