Bernard
Périer is a French Meccano enthusiast born in 1942. He was given his first outfit (a No.5) in
1947, and immediately showed a preference for the small models illustrated in
the instruction manual. Around 1953, he
had a No.7 followed by a No.9 some twenty years later. He used this latter set to build a
radio-controlled American truck and its semi-trailer, just to make sure he was
also able to achieve large models. After
a period of lethargy due to professional duties, he returned to the hobby in
1993 and has since been a regular modeller whose creations are published in
every issue of CONSTRUCTOR QUARTERLY.
A
prolific constructor – more than 1250 models built in 25 years – he continues
to privilege compact constructions, but also explores the possibilities of
other systems such as Trix, Eitech and Fischertechnik, without forgetting the
most unusual Meccano Speed Play and the weird plastic parts recently brought
out under the aegis of Spin Master, the new owner of Meccano. Thanks to the international circulation of
CQ, his impeccably finished models are regularly reproduced by enthusiasts all
over the world. Photographs of many of
them, taken at club exhibitions, can be seen on the Internet. Bernard has also acquired a wealth of
experience in digital photography of his models and in various image processors
that he uses to make his photographs as informative and attractive as can be.
Bernard Périer by Steve Bright
Magic
Factory can be considered as the author’s testament as regards building
aptitudes and centres of interest.
Illustrated with more than 650 colour photographs, Bernard’s third book
deals with novelty models, other systems and Meccano plastic parts that are
still subject to controversy today. It
also features four autobiographic “Road Movies” that Bernard lived through
together with his parents. These give an
interesting perspective on the environment he has known in his young age and
may explain why he became an engineer working for the automobile industry,
always in search of the best technical solutions at minimum cost.
MAGIC Factory throws a new light on some
favourite themes of a multifaceted builder: animated or elementary Meccano models,
other construction systems and other building materials such as cardboard or
plastic. These are the domains in which
Bernard Périer gives a dazzling demonstration of his talents. However, the 300 or so models featured in
this book are relatively simple and easy to assemble, for this philosophy has
always prevailed with Bernard, now a retired engineer. The author also recounts some personal
anecdotes about his teenage life, which explain his fascination for the world
of motor cars and will surely delight those who wonder about his past. Bernard’s childhood memories are illustrated
with cartoons by Steve Bright, another supreme master, who also drew the front
cover of this work.
