On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "The Lands of Deloraine.", Scottish Borders, Scotland. 

The lands of Deloraine are adjoining to those of Buccleuch, in Ettricke Forest. They were immemorially possessed by the Buccleuch family under the strong title of occupancy, although no charter was obtained from the crown until 1545. Like other possessions, the lands of Deloraine were occasionally granted by them to vassals, or kinsmen, for Border-service.

DATE PRINTED: 1808, dated on the print.

SIZE: The printed view, including titles, is approximately 17 x 14 cm, 6.75 x 5.55 inches (medium) plus good margins.

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER:  Engraved by James Heath from an original study by John Christian Schetky (11 August 1778 – 29 January 1874). Schetky was descended from an old Hungarian-Transylvanian family, which, for political reasons, had emigrated to Leipzig at the beginning of the 16th century. His father was Johann Georg Christoff Schetky, a celebrated composer and cellist, who had settled in Edinburgh in 1773, and had married Maria Anna Theresa Reinagle, also of Hungarian descent, in 1774. John Christian was the couple's fourth son. He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, where he formed a lifelong friendship with his near-contemporary, Walter Scott.

PROVENANCE:  This print was published in the scarce work "Illustrations of Walter Scott's Lay of the Last Minstrel." Scott's historical narrative poem, set in the Scottish Borders in the sixteenth century, in six cantos, written as if sung by a minstrel. Published: London Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme (1808)Paternoster Row.

VERSO: There is a nothing on the reverse side which is blank.

It borders Peeblesshire to the west, Midlothian to the north, Roxburghshire to the east, and Dumfriesshire to the south. It derives its name from its county town, the royal burgh of Selkirk. The county was historically also known as Ettrick Forest.
