About Thomas Henry Huxley:
Thomas Henry Huxley, an English biologist and anthropologist, gained fame as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his strong support of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. One notable event was his 1860 debate at Oxford with Samuel Wilberforce, which played a crucial role in advancing acceptance of evolution. While some historians question the accuracy of the stories surrounding this debate, it remains significant in Huxley's career. Despite initial hesitation towards some of Darwin's ideas, Huxley publicly endorsed them and became a prominent advocate for scientific education in Britain. He coined the term "agnosticism" to describe the nature of knowable claims. Despite limited formal schooling, Huxley became renowned for his expertise in comparative anatomy, particularly in clarifying relationships between different animal groups. His work suggested that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs, a view now widely accepted. Though his anatomical achievements sometimes overshadowed by his advocacy for evolution and scientific education, his influence extended globally, with his lectures on evolution, particularly his 1893 Romanes Lecture, leaving a significant impact even in China.
