History:

English watch and chronometer maker Eardley Norton was born in 1740 and was based in London. From 1762 he was a member of the Clockmakers Company and ran a workshop at 49 St. John St. Clerdenwell, London. He mainly manufactured watch, marine chronometer and pocket watch of normal to highest quality. In 1771 he received an English patent. For George III he made a royal watch collection, the showpiece of which was an astronomical watch with four dials. Norton then received £ 1,042 for these watches - a considerable sum at that time. Another notable work is the music clock that he made for Russian Tsarina Catherine. Eardley Norton died in 1794.
