Bender, Wolfgang (1992). Rastafari-Kunst Aus Jamaika. Bremen, CON

Pioneer study of the art of the Rastafarian movement in Jamaica by a leading expert on popular art in African and the Caribbeans.  Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, February/March 1992.  The book opens with an illustrated survey of the history of Rastafarianism and Rasta art and the importance of visual culture to religious expression.  The book includes interviews with artists and experts, conversations, poetry, and short essays on specific topics such as Haile Selassie in Jamaica, Reggae and art, and more. See images for a full TOC.

The second half of the book consists of images of Rastafarian art in different media from murals to oil paintings with biographies of artists and discussions of their work.  Many of the images are in full color.

You do not need to be able to read German to enjoy the richness of Jamaican art and its religious inspiration.
