A VERY NICE 1915 2d GREY 2nd WATERMARK KANGAROO: “BREAK IN LINE SEVENTEEN BELOW TIP OF CAPE YORK” ACSC UNLISTED - GREG POPE PLATE POSITION 2L35 - 2021 CV APPROX $125 - 1915 SCARCE 2nd WATERMARK
The 2nd Watermark 2d GREY Kangaroo was printed by J.B. COOKE in a single printing in December 1914. The earliest known date of use is 15 January 1915. These marsupials were printed off two Plates (1 Upper & 2 Lower) in sheets of 120. They were replaced by the 3rd Watermark GREYS printed in October/November 1915. In this single (and very limited) print run for the 2nd Watermark GREY Kangaroo only 6,120,000 stamps were printed. This scarce marsupial Kangaroo is listed by GREG POPE in his study of the 2d GREY KANGAROO as:
“2R35: BREAK IN THE SEVENTEENTH SHADING LINE BELOW CAPE YORK OFF THE EAST COAST OF QUEENSLAND” (see scans below).
The 'numbers' really tell the story… Generally, the 1915, 2nd Watermark Kangaroo (Wide Crown Over Narrow A) had a very limited issue from January 1915 to mid 1916 (the 5/- had a slightly longer run). These 2d Greys were issued for use in January 1915 with the 3rd Watermark series commencing only seven months later in November 1915 ~ a very limited issue (for any postage stamp in the world). Compared to the 6 million 2nd Wmk 2d GREYs printed, there were 23m 1st Wmk, & 57.5m 3rd Wmks.
This variety recurs at Plate Position 2L35 … that is … it is the 35th Stamp on the LEFT PANE of PLATE TWO (the Lower Plate used to print these in 1915). This very nice example IS CENTERED A LITTLE LEFT with a short perforation at the lower left. After saying that, the ACSC is VERY CONSERVATIVE in suggesting CVs for 2nd Watermark Kangaroos. Based on the numbers [SCARCITY] these 2nd Watermark varieties should CV at around $200-$250.
