The Omnibus of Crime edited by Dorothy L. Sayers 1929 Hardcover First Printing

This old book is, simply put, a treasure trove for those of us who enjoy classic mystery and horror stories. Dorothy Sayers' introduction alone is worth the cost of the book. Her selections include stories by the famous: Poe, Conan Doyle, Stevenson and many from excellent but lesser known (sometimes now forgotten) authors. Keep in mind her 'modern' detective stories could have been written before the Civil War, so there is a long span of material to draw from. The selections are not just genteel, cozy stories, they encompass everything from the standard detective mystery to crimes of horror and the macabre. Many of the entries are short, often less than twenty-five pages, common for the period. I found they should be read slowly, savoring the writers' words and enjoying the dilemmas, cleverness and atmosphere created. Highly recommended and worth searching out a good copy.
