Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) took up photography at the age of 48, after her children gave her a camera as a gift. She used it to photograph family and famous friends and she became one of the most prolific and advanced photographers of her time. She strove to depict beauty in her works and did it through both close-up portraits and visual allegories based on religious or literary works.
