OVERVIEW:  Here’s a c. 1886 pair of sterling cufflinks that were converted to earrings in the mid 20th century.  They were made by the Howard Sterling Co. of Providence.  Each depicts the yacht Galatea, the runner-up at 1886’s America’s Cup.  The winner of the race, Mayflower, was also depicted on jewelry by this maker.  Such items were perhaps sold leading up to the race--you could wear whichever yacht you were rooting for.  A really cool and hard-to-find example of antique America’s Cup memorabilia.

As I mentioned above, these were originally cufflinks with the exact type of back shown in the last photo.  A lot of Victorian cufflinks were converted to earrings, a more fashionable and wearable form, in the mid-20th century.  The cufflinks shown in my last photo were made by the same company and available for sale if you are interested in restoring the America’s Cup cufflinks to their original state.
