OPHIOPOGON PLANISCAPUS 'NIGRESCENS'

A rhizomatous tufted evergreen perennial with striking strap like leathery leaves which form a dense mat of foliage. The leaves emerge green but upon exposure to sun turn black. Leafless flowering stems in summer hold small and delicate racemes of mauve bell shaped flowers. Glossy berries are then borne in Autumn. Best grown in full sun or partial shade in moist but well draining humus rich soils. The height and spread of the plant is 40-50cm. A useful plant for underplanting trees and shrubs, great in pots, with ferns and other ornamental grasses. Propagation is by division in spring however I have grown them from seed with good leaf colours produced.
