People magazine June 7, 1950 - Jane Russell cover, Namatjira, Nancy Wake

From the golden era of Australia's People magazine.

Coverage includes: Jane Russell cover and feature, Albert Namatjira, Nancy Wake, jockey Stan Taylor, filmmaker Ken G Hall, Rose Shaw of Martin Place and much more.

People magazine was first published in 1950, and covered "everything from news, to scandals, to true crime stories." The magazine was launched with the mission of telling stories about Australians from all walks of life. It steered away from the domestic focus of contemporary titles like Woman's Day, and an idealised, curated image of Australia. Decades later, the girlie pictures started to outweigh the articles and it morphed into a dedicated lad's mag. But in the 1950s and early 1960s People was a surprising read, often with extended, thoughtful coverage of gender issues, abortion and contraception, war crimes and war, adventure, crime, gambling and the seedier side of Australian cities, along with profiles of Australians and international celebrities.
